A walk across the iconic Eersterivier Hangbrug is an experience enjoyed by students and residents alike. It’s a crossing from town to mountain, providing instant access to the simple pleasures of outdoor living: fresh air, rushing water, and the wild mountainside right on our doorstep. And in Stellenbosch, we’re all about those simple pleasures, like savouring a chilled glass of Chenin Blanc.
The beautiful Moederkerk is an unpretentious example of Neo-Gothic architecture, located in the heart of Stellenbosch and surrounded by oaks. Its familiar steeple watches over residents as they go about their daily business. The clean and striking beauty of the Moederkerk is reminiscent of our bright yet elegant Chardonnay.
The Stellenbosch Town Hall was built in 1939 and designed by architects Elsworth and Walgate. It is a stately example of modern Cape Dutch and Classical Revival architecture, featuring beautifully preserved yellowwood ceilings. Our Cinsault is named after the town hall, as the grapes come from old vines that, in their own way, offer a taste of Stellenbosch’s heritage.
The Kweekskool is home to the Theology faculty of Stellenbosch University. This building marked the beginning of higher education in Stellenbosch when it was established as the Theology Seminary in 1859. Originally built in 1687 and subsequently remodeled over the years, the evolution and endurance of this distinctive building is what we strive to capture in our Merlot.
The Kruithuis was completed in 1777 as the munitions building for the Dutch East India Company. Prior to this, the officers of the Stellenbosch cavalry had to go to Cape Town for military training once a year. Today, the Kruithuis stands as a symbol of military strength and power, which is reflected in the powerful flavors and structure of our Syrah.
At the time of Stellenbosch’s bicentenary, the community decided to erect a monument in its commemoration. It was decided to build a new university building, highlighting the importance given to education in this historic town. The building took just over six years to complete and was designed by Carl Otto Hager, the same architect who designed the Moederkerk.
Founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape, Stellenbosch is unique in that it is the center of fine wine, cuisine, academia, and culture in South Africa. Stellenbosch has been home to many leaders, intellectuals, artists, sportsmen, scientists, and winemakers. This wine pays homage to our town and its rich and diverse cultural heritage.
